Apple extends warranty for MacBook Pro with faulty Nvidia Chip

Release of Apple’s MacBook Pro laptop was welcomed by the critics and Apple seemed very enthusiastic about it until something really bad occurred. Apple publicized its new GeForce 8600 GT mobile graphics processor in strongly positive terms. This new model of processor is made by Nvidia based in Santa Clara, Calif. However, reviewers and the Apple Inc itself was shocked when users complained about the faulty Nvidia graphics processors. Initially it was hard to digest but now Apple has openly accepted that some models manufactured between May 2007 and September 2008, including the 15-inch, 17-inch may have faulty chips. According to the Apple, as posted in the website of MacBook Pro, Nvidia convinced Apple that Mac computers with the graphics processors were not affected by these faulty chips. But later investigations revealed that MacBook Pro Laptops with the GeForce processors were affected.

As a result, Apple is under the radar of its customers and has now agreed to extend the warranty of affected Systems. If the Nvidia graphics processor in your MacBook Pro has failed, or fails within two years of the original date of purchase, free of charge repair has been assured. If your MacBook Pro is out of warranty even then you will be serviced free of cost. Hence there is some relief for the customers. Moreover, for those customers who already paid for the repair service due to faulty chip, the money will be refunded. Now this is the good sense of accountability shown by the big firm like Apple Inc which will keep the faith of consumers intact. Nvidia is under critical attack by its shareholders for blotting out the problem. Though Nvidia may be responsible somewhere but its achievements in past may help it to hold the market. It is really tough time for both these giants.

Touchscreen Smartphones

Though the history of Touchscreen technology is quite old but it gained major attention when it was embedded with the mobile handsets. According to definition Touchscreen simply means onscreen input which can be via light pen or any other device. Touchscreen systems are based on the coordinate system on the screen. These days Touchscreen mobile phones many times called as Smartphone by some vendors are prevailing in the market. Smartphone has an Operating System installed that offers advanced functionality which are beyond a typical mobile phone. And the Touchscreen Smartphone is nothing less then a Touchscreen mini PC in your pocket. Isn’t it amazing? The first Smartphone was designed in 1992 by IBM which was named as Simon. But later many companies came with their Smartphones. RIM released its first Smartphone with wireless email feature. That was the first version of BlackBerry. That was only the beginning as it revolutionized this industry. Nokia too released its phone with such features but it named it as Imaging Phone. The most common operating systems used in these handsets are Symbian OS, RIM BlackBerry, Windows and now iPhone OS from Apple Inc is developing great craze in the market.

These days Apple’s iPhone is rocking in the market. But RIM’s Blackberry Storm is now trying to catch the attention of the market with its magnificent clickable interface which resembles to Apple’s iPhone. It is now believed that other companies also will implement these touch screen feature and hence the technology will drive mobile phone industry for coming many years. Apple iPhone’s feature of zooming into the images by back movement of the fingers and zooming out in opposite way is something people really got attracted to. Hence currently it is the first choice in the market. As always Apple seems to lead as far as the innovation in technology is concerned. Though both Nokia and Apple needs to be careful and must come out with something new and more lucrative because the BlackBerry Storm is going to be released at the end of 2008, and according to RIM it has a new touch screen feature in which the gentle click gives the feeling of a keyboard or a mouse and is totally different from those used by the formers. It also provides features such as slides, multi-touch taps and the ability to highlight, scroll and zoom. Mike Lazaridis, RIM’s president, is very confident about the success of their new product and very excited for its release in the market.

You can avail all these new and completely different user experience in Smartphone later this year with Verizon Wireless in US and Vodafone in Asia and Europe. Now whether it is really unique or similar to the other  Smartphones will be decided by the consumers after its release. But these innovative devices have definitely changed the way human interact today. They are having good hold over the market, and why not, they have made impossible happen.

Asus Eee Box PC shipped with Worm

What would be your reaction when your vendor says that the PC sold to you has a virus in its D: i.e. D drive? Don’t think I am kidding because it has actually happened in real. If you have purchased the Asus Eee Box desktop PC recently then your PC is at great risk. Asus has admitted that some of the versions it shipped, with Windows installed, to market was actually tainted with the worm named W32/Usbalex which is present in the second drive of Hard Disk. Whenever you double click on your second drive it will get executed automatically because your second drive also contains the autorun.inf file which is widely used for executing the files. Autorun.inf contains the script which tells the location of the executable file to be executed.

For example:

[autorun]

open=xxx.exe
icon=someicon.ico

The above code in autorun.inf placed in some folder say “abc” in executes “xxx.exe” whenever someone double clicks the folder. “xxx.exe” can possibly be a virus. The same has happened here. In this case the worm is hiding with the name recycled.exe. Actually every Windows partition has a hidden system folder called Recycler which contains the files deleted from that partition. The same list of deleted files is also listed in Recycle Bin. So it gets easier for a worm to reside under his name as you would think that it is a system file. However you can catch it if you have enabled viewing the file extension from Folder Options.

In way explained as above, once the worm gets executed it infects the other program in the memory by getting copied and replicated. But the problem of Asus worsened when a writer of Register Hardware Tony Smith stated in his article that the version ordered by him contains a different virus called W32/Taterf, a.k.a. W32.Gammima.AG which attempts to steal username and password combinations for popular online games. So let’s wait for the explanation Asus gives to defend itself.

Google email archiving service extends for upto decade

Are you using Google Message Discovery? If yes then Google has planned something really special for you. Google has decided to extend its email archiving service for 10 years. It has also decided the service cost. When the service was launched in this April, it charged each user $25 per year and provided the anti-spam and antivirus service. Though it will still offer the same for a year at the same or reduced cost, but according to the new plans now it will hold e-mail for up to a decade charging each user $45 per year. Apart from the archiving and email searching this service package will also include the security service for e-mail. So it’s going to be a good deal as according to the Google’s enterprise blog it will cost them $200 per year per user for on-premise security and archiving software and hardware. The Google hosted e-mail archiving service has a good hold on the market as it supports Microsoft’s Exchange and IBM’s Lotus Domino e-mail systems. Moreover, most of the businesses today are subscribing these services. It has well enough competition in the market against the Symantec’s MessageLabs. So it would be great to watch the prices put by these enterprises. Service cost may vary from region to region.
